Birch species are generally small to medium-sized trees or shrubs, mostly of temperate climates.The bark of all birches is characteristically marked with long, horizontal lenticels, and often separates into thin, papery plates, especially upon the paper birch. It is resistant to decay, due to the resinous oil it contains. Its decided color gives the common names gray, white, black, silver and yellow birch to different species. 

 

Betulinic acid is a naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpenoid which has anti-retroviral, anti-malarial, and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as a more recently discovered potential as an anticancer agent, by inhibition of topoisomerase. It is found in the bark of several species of plants, principally the white birch (Betula pubescens) from which it gets its name.

Betulinic acid is a pentacyclic trialkyl compound, which is widely present in nature. It was originally isolated from the bark of evergreen plants of the Rhamnaceae growing in Eastern Africa, but the main source is extracted and purified from the bark of birch .
