What is Ciprofloxacin HCl?
Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a number of bacterial infections. This includes bone and joint infections, intra-abdominal infections, certain types of infectious diarrhea, respiratory tract infections, skin infections, typhoid fever, and urinary tract infections, among others. For some infections it is used in addition to other antibiotics. It can be taken by mouth, as eye drops, as ear drops, or intravenously.
Introduction
Ciprofloxacin belongs to the third generation of quinolone antibiotics. It was first launched in the United States, Germany, and Chile in 1987 and has become the most widely used fluoroquinolone antibiotic in the world. Its antibacterial spectrum is similar to that of norfloxacin, but its antibacterial activity is 2-10 times stronger, making it the strongest in vitro antibacterial activity among these drugs. The antibacterial activity against Enterobacteriaceae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Streptococcus, Legionella, Staphylococcus aureus and other antibiotics is significantly better than cephalosporins and aminoglycosides. The antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria is similar to ofloxacin. The antibacterial activity against all sensitive gram-negative bacteria is 2 to 4 times stronger than norfloxacin, ofloxacin, and also better than cefaclor and gentamicin. Gentamicin resistant Enterobacteriaceae bacteria and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus are also often sensitive to this product. The mechanism of action of ciprofloxacin is to inhibit the DNA cyclooxygenase involved in nucleic acid synthesis, which inhibits cell division and kills bacteria by disrupting the structure of bacterial DNA.
