Xylose is a component of xylan, which is widely found in plants. Xylose is also present in animal heparin, chondroitin and glycoproteins. It is the connecting unit of sugar chains and serine (or threonine) in certain glycoproteins. Xylose in a free state has not been found in nature so far.

In animal proteoglycans, D-xylose and the serine residues of the polypeptide chain are connected by glycosidic bonds to form a bridging structure between the polysaccharide side chain and the protein.
