What is Oxaliplatin?
Oxaliplatin, also known as oxadine and oxalate platinum, is a platinum derivative and is clinically used to treat patients with colorectal cancer metastasis after fluorouracil treatment failure. It can be used alone or in combination with fluorouracil. The third generation of new platinum-based antitumor compounds after carboplatin is also the only platinum-based drug with significant activity on colorectal cancer so far. The principle of action is to inhibit DNA synthesis and replication by producing alkylated conjugates on DNA to form intra- and inter-strand crosslinks. It also inhibits proliferation of ovarian cancer and melanoma cell lines.
