What is Melanotan II?
Melanotan II (CAS NO.121062-08-6) was first synthesized at the University of Arizona. Researchers decided to find a more potent and stable alternative, one that would be more practical to defend against skin cancer.
The researchers headed by Victor Hruby found a peptide, [Nle4, D-Phe7]-α-MSH, that was approximately 1,000 times more potent than natural α-MSH after synthesizing and
screening hundreds of molecules. They dubbed this new peptide, "Melanotan" (later Melanotan I, now known as afamelanotide). They subsequently developed another analog, Ac-Nle-cyclo[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-NH2), which they named "Melanotan Acetate".
Since their discovery, numerous studies dating back to the mid-1980s have found no obvious toxic effects of the Melanotan peptides. The scientists hoped to use Melanotan peptides to combat melanoma by stimulating the body's natural tanning mechanism to create a tan without first needing exposure to harmful levels of UV radiation. This in turn, they hypothesized, could reduce the potential for skin damage that can eventually lead to skin cancer.
Melanotan How does it work?
Melanotan 2 works by stimulating the release of the pigment melanin from the skin. Less UV exposure is necessary with Melanotan 2 compared to "normal tanning", and the tan that occurs with tanning is deeper and longer lasting than an individual's "normal tan". Melanotan works best (has the most noticeable effects) on people with fair skin tones.
Melanotan How is MT2 Used?
The peptide is shipped enclosed in a vial. It is in a powder dried form that must be reconstituted using sterile water and then injected under the skin (subcutaneously) where it is absorbed into the skin and spread throughout.

Lasting Tan: Even if the dosage is stopped, a warm sun-kissed tan can last for months at a time without any exposure to the sun. Conversely, tans developed naturally fade in around a months time.

Reduced exposure to sunlight (UV rays): Melanotan still needs exposure to sunlight to be effective. However, it will allow the user a significant reduction in time to develop the desired tan.
Side effects: Side effects for Melanotan 2 include nausea, appetite loss, facial flushing and increased libido. Side effects are generally mild and tend to diminish over time. Some research suggests nausea can be reduced by injecting MT-II after dinner or before bed. Athletes and bodybuilders have injected peptides like Melanotan 2 intermittently to prolong their tan since a tan aided by Melanotan can last 2-3 times as long as a normal tan. Like other peptides, Melanotan is a fragile molecule, therefore Melanotan nasal sprays, pre-mixed peptides, pills, oral and loose powder are not often legitimate for research effectiveness.
