Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is an arachidonic acid derivative generated by the actions of cyclooxgenases COX1 and COX2. A chemical genetic screen for regulators of HSC development in zebrafish led to the identification of PGE2 as an important HSC stimulatory factor, while inhibition of COX enzyme activity with indomethacin decreased HSC formation.

The symptoms are similar to phlebitis when administered intravenously and disappear on their own when the drug is stopped.
