Dermorphn is a hepta-peptide first isolated from the skin of South American frogs belonging to the genus Phyllomedusa. The peptide is a natural opioid that binds as an agonist with high potency and selectivity to mu Opioid receptors. Dermorphn is about 30-40 times more potent than mor*phine but theoretically may be less likely to produce drug tolerance and addiction. The amino acid sequence of dermorphn is H-Tyr-D-Ala-Phe-Gly-Tyr-Pro-Ser-NH2.
It is 30-to-40 times more potent an analgesic than mor*phine2 and is unique because it contains D-alanine, a property that makes it highly resistant to protease mediated degradation (Figure 1). While d-amino acid peptides are sought after for their low immunogenic response and in peptidomimetic drug design, it was dermorphn's use in horse racing that catapulted this opioid peptide from obscurity into the headlines. The pain-killing properties of dermorphn were used to drive racehorse performance beyond normal physical limits often injuring the animal.
3. Dermorphn Benefits
Dermorphn is not found in humans or other mammals and similar D-amino acid peptides have only been found in bacteria, amphibians and molluscs. Dermorphn appears to be made in these through an unusual posttranslational modification carried out by an amino acid isomerase. This unusual process is needed because the D-alanine in this peptide is not among the 20 amino acids coded for in the genetic code and thus the peptide cannot be synthesized in the usual way from the encodings in the genome of an organism.
Dermorphn has been lgally used in horse racing as a performance enhancing drug. Due to dermorphn's painilling activity, horses treated with dermorphn may run harder than they would otherwise.
4. Danger/ Risk of Dermorphn
Mu-opioid agonist overdoses can potentially cause respiratory failure & death. It's unknown if DM affects the respiratory system in the same way, but to be safe, it's best that we assume it does. Long-term risks are still unknown, other than anecdotal feedback from long-term KAMBO users, which is unreliable since DM is only one of 8 active compounds in Kambo.
Long-term mu-opioid agonists are associated with memory/cognitive deficits, but this is believed to be from their negative effects on REM sleep. In my experience, DM helps with cognition/memory/REM sleep, at least in the short term.
