 Adenosine cyclophosphate, or cAMP, is produced by the dehydration condensation of adenosine triphosphate 5′-phosphate with ribose 3′-hydroxyl group, which is catalyzed by adenylate cyclase, and inactivated by phosphodiesterase, which hydrolyzes cAMP to produce 5′-AMP. Therefore, the concentration of cAMP depends on the magnitude of adenylate cyclase and phosphodiesterase activity. Under normal conditions, the intracellular cAMP level is very small, about 0.1 μm; under hormonal action, it can rise more than 100-fold. The hormone binds to receptors on the cell surface and activates G proteins in the cell membrane, which in turn activates adenylate cyclase on the inner side of the cell membrane, catalyzing the production of ATP white kinase (A kinase), which catalyzes the phosphate modification of various enzymes and proteins, and initiates the response of the target cell, making the tiny amount of hormone a powerful biological effect, so that the hormone is called cAMP is the first messenger and cAMP is the second messenger. In myocardial tissue, cAMP activates protein kinase to phosphorylate myogenic proteins and Ca2+ binding to enhance muscle contraction; phosphorylation of membrane proteins on the sarcoplasmic reticulum accelerates Ca2+ uptake into the sarcoplasmic reticulum and accelerates muscle fibre diastole, which has the effect of mimicking epinephri ne to enhance myocardial contractility and increase heart rate. In addition, cAMP has the effect of inhibiting cell division and promoting cell differentiation.
